Is Your Roaming Actually Working? Here's How to Tell

Fuse Mobile includes roaming in 130+ countries on Pulse and Surge plans — no daily fees, no add-ons required. But landing at a foreign airport and staring at a spinning loading icon is a special kind of travel stress. This step-by-step guide shows you exactly how to confirm roaming is enabled before you fly, what to look for when you land, and how to fix it if data isn't connecting.

Before You Fly: Enable Roaming on Your Device

Fuse handles network selection automatically abroad, but your device still needs roaming switched on at the OS level. Think of it as a gate your phone controls independently of your SIM — Fuse can't open it for you.

On iPhone (iOS)

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Mobile Service (or Cellular on some iOS versions)
  3. Tap Mobile Data Options
  4. Make sure Data Roaming is toggled on (green)
  5. While you're here, confirm Mobile Data itself is also on

If you have two SIMs (a physical SIM and your Fuse eSIM), tap the Fuse line specifically before checking these settings — each SIM has its own roaming toggle.

On Android

Android menus vary by manufacturer, but the path is usually:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to ConnectionsMobile Networks (Samsung) or Network & InternetSIMs (Pixel/stock Android)
  3. Select your Fuse eSIM line
  4. Toggle Data Roaming on

On some Android devices you'll also see an International Roaming option — enable that too if it appears.

Tip: Do this at home, before you travel. Airport Wi-Fi is rarely reliable enough to troubleshoot settings on the go.

What You Should See When You Land

Once you're abroad with roaming enabled, Fuse's eSIM connects automatically to a local partner network. Here's what to look for:

The Network Indicator

At the top of your screen (the status bar), you'll see:

  • A network name — this will be a local carrier, not EE, Three, Vodafone or O2. That's completely normal. Fuse has roaming agreements with partner networks in each country, and your phone will display whichever one it's connected to.
  • A signal strength icon — bars or dots depending on your device
  • A data indicator — 4G, LTE, 5G, or occasionally 3G depending on local network availability

If you see all three, your roaming is working.

A Quick Connectivity Test

Don't rely on the status bar alone. Do a quick live test:

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi (Settings → Wi-Fi → off)
  2. Open your browser and go to a simple site like bbc.co.uk
  3. If it loads, you're connected. Done.

If it doesn't load, move on to the troubleshooting steps below.

Roaming Not Working? Step-by-Step Fixes

If your data isn't connecting after landing, work through these fixes in order. Most issues resolve within the first two steps.

Step 1: Toggle Aeroplane Mode

This is the fastest fix and works surprisingly often. It forces your phone to drop its current network connection and search for a new one.

  1. Enable Aeroplane Mode and wait 15–20 seconds
  2. Disable Aeroplane Mode
  3. Wait up to 60 seconds for the phone to find and register on a local network
  4. Test your data connection

Step 2: Check the Roaming Toggle (Again)

Some phones reset roaming settings after a restart or OS update. Go back into your mobile data settings and confirm Data Roaming is still switched on for your Fuse eSIM line.

Step 3: Check Your Plan

Roaming is included on Pulse and Surge plans. If you're on Spark, roaming isn't available — Spark is a UK-only plan. If you're unsure which plan you're on, log in to your Fuse account or check the Fuse plans page.

Step 4: Check APN Settings

APN (Access Point Name) settings tell your phone how to connect to mobile data. Fuse eSIMs are provisioned with the correct APN automatically, but occasionally a device will override these.

Four UK networks, one eSIM. No contract.

Get connected to all four UK networks and never worry about signal again.

On iPhone:

  1. Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data Network
  2. Check the APN field under Mobile Data — it should be pre-filled
  3. If it's blank, contact Fuse support via /resources/help and they'll provide the correct value

On Android:

  1. Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Access Point Names
  2. Select your Fuse eSIM line
  3. If no APN is listed, tap the + icon — Fuse support can provide the correct details

Step 5: Manually Select a Network

By default, Fuse uses automatic network selection — it picks the best available partner network in your location. If automatic selection is failing, you can try selecting a network manually:

On iPhone:

  1. Settings → Mobile Service → Network Selection
  2. Turn off Automatic
  3. Wait for available networks to appear (this can take 30–60 seconds)
  4. Select a network from the list
  5. If data works, great. If not, try another network from the list.

On Android:

  1. Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Network Operators
  2. Tap Search Now
  3. Select an available network

Important: Manual network selection is a troubleshooting step, not a long-term setting. Once your data is working, switch back to Automatic — Fuse is designed to manage network selection for you, and automatic mode will always find the strongest available signal.

Step 6: Restart Your Phone

A full restart clears temporary network states that toggling aeroplane mode sometimes misses. Power off completely, wait 10 seconds, power back on, and test again.

Step 7: Contact Fuse Support

If none of the above resolves it, get in touch. The help centre has live support options, and the guides section covers additional device-specific steps. Fuse's support team can check your account status, confirm your eSIM is active, and troubleshoot from their end.

How Fuse's Automatic Network Selection Works

This is worth understanding, because it's different from how most people think about roaming.

When you're in the UK, Fuse's eSIM connects to whichever of the four UK networks — EE, Three, Vodafone, or O2 — has the strongest signal wherever you are. It switches automatically, without you doing anything.

Abroad, the same principle applies, but instead of four UK networks, Fuse connects to local partner networks in your destination country. Your phone will show the name of that local network in the status bar — this is expected and correct.

You don't need to configure anything, select a country, or activate a roaming add-on. As long as roaming is toggled on in your device settings and you're on a Pulse or Surge plan, Fuse handles everything else. See the full list of supported destinations on the roaming page.

Pre-Flight Checklist: Screenshot This Before You Travel

Run through this before you leave home. It takes two minutes and prevents the vast majority of roaming issues.

  • Fuse plan confirmed — you're on Pulse or Surge (not Spark)
  • eSIM activated — your Fuse eSIM is installed and active on your device
  • Mobile Data on — enabled in your device settings for the Fuse line
  • Data Roaming on — toggled on specifically for the Fuse eSIM line
  • Wi-Fi Calling — optional, but worth enabling if your device supports it
  • Destination covered — check fuse mobile roaming coverage for your country
  • Support bookmarked — save /resources/help to your browser favourites while you're on Wi-Fi
  • Quick test done — turn off Wi-Fi at home and confirm mobile data loads a webpage on the Fuse line

FAQ

How do I know if my Fuse eSIM is roaming or just connected to Wi-Fi?

Turn Wi-Fi off in your device settings, then try loading a webpage. If it loads, you're on mobile data — which means roaming is working. If it doesn't load with Wi-Fi off, your mobile data connection needs attention.

Why does my phone show a different network name abroad?

That's normal. Fuse connects to local partner networks in each country. The name you see in your status bar will be a local carrier, not one of the four UK networks. As long as you have signal bars and a data indicator (4G/LTE/5G), you're connected correctly.

Can I use roaming on a Spark plan?

No. Spark is a UK-only plan and doesn't include roaming. To use data abroad, you'll need to switch to Pulse or Surge. You can change your plan at any time on the plans page — changes take effect at your next billing date.

Does roaming cost extra on top of my monthly plan?

No. On Pulse and Surge, roaming in 130+ countries is included in your monthly allowance. You use the same data you'd use at home — there are no daily roaming fees or surprise charges. Full details are on the Fuse roaming page.

My data was working and then stopped mid-trip. What should I do?

Start with the aeroplane mode toggle — it forces your phone to re-register on the network. If that doesn't work, check you haven't accidentally turned off Data Roaming (it can get switched off during an OS update). If your data allowance has run out, you'll need to upgrade your plan.
